Metaphors serve as pictures illustrating the mind and its spirituality. The clearly structured musical form of the 3 Metaphors consists of gestures, motoricity-based sequences, breaks and meditative episodes.

The distinctive combination of instruments resulted from the fact that the pieces were commissioned by a Polish ensemble from Stettin, which premiered the work in Swineminde in 1997. In the meantime, the work has also been performed in a version with violin replacing flute (with tiny modifications, e.g. tremolo sul ponticello instead of flutter tongue).
