The ballet Pas de deux for large orchestra, lasting just about 15 minutes, was written in 1962 as a commission for the Oldenburg State Theatre and had its world première there in the same year.
The work brings together characteristic dance scenes in the following order - Introduction - Adagio, Allegro, Cadenza - Allegro molto and Conclusion:

a seven-tome series (modus) exploiting all the half-tones within the tritone c : f-sharp dominates the entire work and gives rise to the necessity of manifold variations of this basic material in the course of the of the different movements.

Bertold Hummel

Hummel's three concise, lively dance scenes, succeed in creating particularly refined effects in sound, drawing upon all the resources of his orchestral forces, strikingly superimposing complex rhythmic layers, while the melodic content remains more sober.
