Hummel composed Pan 56 for Solo Flute and Chamber Orchestra, op. 13d, in 1956 as a commission for the Kleines Orchester of the Südwestfunk (South-West Radio) Baden-Baden, the orchestra which then produced it in the same year under the direction of Willi Stech and included the work frequently in their programmes. This concert piece, marked quasi Andante, opens with the expansive flourishes of a flute cadenza with light accompaniment. The virtuosic rhythms of the middle section (double tempo) lead back to the mood of the beginning. The work fades away in a delicate pp, giving the soloist (in the première it was the solo flautist of the orchestra, Horst Meyer) ample opportunities for artistic freedom and conveying to the listener a bright Arcadian serenity.
