Bertold Hummel wrote his Sonatina for Piano op. 56a in summer 1975, during a holiday stay in Dorfgastein (Austria), for his piano-playing sons. Each movement is dominated by a prevalent interval – the Allegro, in classical sonata form, by the fifth, the song-like Elegy (A-B-A) by the fourth, and the Vivace, with its rondo traits, by the tritone. Although remaining strict in matters of form, Hummel once again shows himself in this light-hearted work as a “one playing with twelve tones” – as he liked to term himself.
